WASHINGTON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An Eastern Carolina court official has been suspended after deputies say they found pot in his Italian sportscar parked behind the courthouse.

Washington County Sheriff Johnny Barnes says Magistrate Danielle Cox, of Roper, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

The sheriff says Cox was the magistrate on duty Friday evening when his car, a 2014 Maserati, was repossessed.

Barnes says acting on information they previously had on Cox, deputies asked the repossession company if they could search the car, and Barnes says they agreed.

That’s when deputies say they found the marijuana.

Knowing that Cox was staying at the Roadway Inn, they then searched that room and found more marijuana and cocaine.

The sheriff says the room was occupied by Cox and Mariah Pearce, of Raleigh. He says she told deputies that the drugs belonged to her.

Pearce was charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.

Cox was released on a $500 unsecured bond, while Pearce was released on a $1,500 bond.

Paperwork was filed Monday to suspend Cox from this magistrate job. Judicial officials say he will be paid during that suspension and there will be a removal hearing before a Superior Court judge.

Cox has been a magistrate since July 2006. The magistrate has a September 27th court date.
