RICHMOND, Va. — After initially warning residents of a “tow truck pirate” stealing a vehicle in Richmond, police have determined that the truck was engaged in a lawful tow.
Police released video of the tow in question. The video was recorded Sunday, October 24, in South Richmond’s Davee Gardens neighborhood between Interstate 95 and Route 301.
“While RPD officers were following the proper procedure for taking a report of a stolen vehicle, information provided by the tow company, which alerts public safety agencies to a legal tow, was not immediately forwarded to RPD. Therefore, RPD officers and detectives were not made aware the vehicle had been lawfully towed while investigating the missing vehicle,” Richmond Police said in a statement on Thursday night.
Police shared surveillance video to alert the public to the possible safety issue.
