Warning On Scam Causing Repossessions In Florida

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about auto payment scams circulating in the area.

The scammers prey on people looking for a way to lower their car payment, or avoid repossession, according to LCSO. Deputies said, people are especially vulnerable this year with reduced incomes due to the pandemic.

The scammers will present a fraudulent “offer” through social media, texts, or robocalls to dramatically reduce a monthly car payment and offer a money-back guarantee.

Officials said, the scammer will typically say they have working relationships with most banks and have fake testimonials posted from “satisfied customers.”

LCSO said typically the scammer will ask for an “application fee” or an “enrollment fee,” as a way to steal money. They may also tell a victim to stop paying their car payment while the application is processed which can result in vehicle repossession.

Investigators suggest directly contacting a lender to reduce payments.
