SC Repo Shooting & Police Chase

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – A Midlands man is accused of leading authorities on a chase that stemmed from a vehicle being repossessed.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said 30-year-old Md Z Islam Epte, of Lynchburg, was arrested Thursday and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm.

The sheriff’s office said deputies first responded to a reports of gunfire on Two Mile Road. The victim told dispatchers that they had just repossessed a vehicle and that the suspect, later identified as Epte, was pursuing them and allegedly fired a weapon.

The victim then told 911 they were heading north on Interstate 95 when Epte allegedly began shining a light with a red dot at them, trying to force the victim off the road.

Authorities said the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office then positioned units near mile marker 164. Troopers and deputies were later able to detain Epte during a traffic stop.

An AR-style rife and a handgun were also found in Epte’s vehicle after a search, according to deputies.

Epte was booked at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and was later released on a $10,000 bond.
