TN Man Sells Trailer With Lien Then Files Stolen Report

A Tellico Plains, TN man was arrested in late November after he allegedly sold a trailer he still owed money on, then reported the trailer stolen.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Det. Jason Filyaw said on Nov. 7 a man reported to the Madisonville Police Department that a 7×11 trailer had been stolen from his house the night before.

But while investigating the incident, officers found the trailer had actually been repossessed. The man said he bought the trailer from David Blaine Cantrell in the county for $4,000 and provided a title showing the purchase and sale price.

Filyaw said Deputy Brian Millsaps told him Cantrell had filed a stolen trailer report with the sheriff’s office after he had sold the trailer to the man.

Filyaw said he was able to get paperwork from Hopkins Management Group, which had financed the purchase for the man, showing they had placed a lean on the trailer for $4,000.

Filyaw said it appeared Cantrell had filed the theft report so he could collect insurance from State Farm.

Cantrell, 42, Graham Loop Road, Tellico Plains, is facing charges of theft over $1,000, filing a false report and hindering creditors.
