Three Carwise Auto Sales employees have been arrested following a physical confrontation at the Wilmington, North Carolina, dealership that began when customers returned to the lot to retrieve property from a vehicle.
The Wilmington Police Department says officers responded to Carwise Auto Sales at 3516 Carolina Beach Road on September 8 after receiving a report of a physical disturbance. According to police, customers were attempting to retrieve their belongings from a vehicle when dealership employees told them to leave the property. An argument followed, and the situation became physical before officers arrived.
Following an investigation, police obtained misdemeanor simple-assault warrants for Grant Parkins, 36, Tegan Canady, 37, and Carson Miller, 53. All three have been arrested. Police also say a fourth person, 36-year-old Stephen Oster, has an outstanding simple-assault warrant that had not been served as of Wednesday.
The incident gained considerable attention after video of the confrontation began circulating online. Wilmington Police confirmed that investigators were aware of the video and reviewed it as part of the investigation. A portion of the footage appears to show a confrontation between dealership employees and a customer in the dealership parking lot.
The incident has a repossession connection that makes the story particularly relevant to the recovery industry. Keiona Green, one of the customers involved, told The NC Beat that her family’s Nissan had been repossessed twice by Carwise and that she and her husband returned to the dealership after seeing the vehicle back on the lot. Green alleged that payments made through Cash App were not properly credited and that personal property—including children’s items and equipment associated with her business—was removed from the vehicle.
Green further alleged that the confrontation escalated after she and her husband attempted to recover their belongings. She said her husband was physically attacked by dealership employees and that she herself was injured during the confrontation. Those allegations are Green’s account and have not been established as facts by police or a court.
Carwise Auto Sales has acknowledged that an altercation occurred but says the short clips circulating online do not show the entire incident or provide its full context. The dealership said it turned over complete surveillance footage to investigators and, on advice of counsel, declined to release the footage or discuss the evidence publicly while the matter is pending.
The dealership also said it is required to enforce its contracts when customer accounts remain unresolved and that it attempts to work with customers experiencing financial hardship when possible. Carwise said it would allow the evidence and legal process to determine what happened. The company also reported receiving threats against employees, their families and dealership property after the video began circulating.
