2 More Cops Terminated Over LPR Violations
Joining a growing list of fired cops, two Greer (South Carolina) police officers have been terminated after an investigation found they violated the department’s policy governing the use of Automatic License Plate Recognition technology, officials said.
According to a release by the Greer Police Department, Corporal Kareem Lynch was terminated on June 26, and Officer Sebastian Echeverry was terminated on June 29 following an internal investigation into the improper use of Flock Safety, a license plate recognition system used by the department.
The Greer Police Department’s ALPR policy, established in January 2023, states the technology is intended for “public safety-related missions of the agency.” The policy also warns that misuse of the system may result in disciplinary action.
Officials said the policy has been updated several times to reflect changes in technology and law enforcement best practices, with revised guidelines provided to department personnel.
Greer City Administrator Andrew Merriman said the department investigated allegations involving Lynch and Echeverry and used Flock Safety’s AI Audit Assistance tool to review activity on the platform.
The city did not release additional details about the specific policy violations.
