Tennis Player Wins Italian Open So He Can Redeem Truck
Tommy Paul has disclosed that he had to win enough at the Italian Open to retrieve his repossessed truck. The Florida native has made it to the semi-finals in Rome, where players complained about the quality of tennis balls, putting up a strong performance with wins over Tomas Machac, Alex de Minaur, and Hubert Hurkacz.
Despite his on-court success, Paul has faced turmoil off the court with the repossession of his truck due to missed payments. Although he’s earned significant sums in his tennis career, he was required to win prize money in Rome adequate to cover the repossession costs.
Paul remarked: “On court everything has been going pretty well. Off court, a little bit of a stressful week. I got my truck repossessed. I missed a couple payments and they took my truck from my house this week.
“I’ve been grinding to get my truck back. If you know me, that’s my baby. Yeah, really grinding to get that back. [I live] in Florida, in Boca Raton. I don’t want to give out my full address.”
He mentioned that the recovery fee was $1,000. “I already paid it back,” he noted. “A grand. I have my trainer going to pick it up today. Ford took it back. I’m excited to get it back. I had to win a couple matches so I could pay that off.”
Paul reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open, ensuring a prize money payout of approximately $325,000, before falling to Jannik Sinner in three sets.
Sinner will face Carlos Alcaraz in the final with $1.1 million in prize money at stake. Paul knew beating Sinner would be a daunting challenge.
“[He’s the] best player in the world,” the American said ahead of the clash. “He’s excited to be playing here in Rome, I’m sure. I’ve been watching him play this week. It’s been fun to watch, doesn’t feel like he’s rusty very much at all.”
