Anti-Regulation Scalia Tapped For Labor Sec.
WASHINGTON—In Eugene Scalia, the Trump administration has found a potential secretary of labor with an established record of pursuing limits on government regulation of business.
Mr. Scalia, 55 years old, has devoted almost a decade to fighting rules associated with the 2010 Dodd-Frank law intended to make the financial system safer following the financial crisis. As a partner at the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Mr. Scalia has represented the financial-services industry in challenging the rules, often arguing that policy makers failed to thoroughly review their costs and benefits before completing them.
In one recent victory, he successfully challenged a 2016 retirement-advice rule set by the Obama-era Labor Department, arguing that it had exceeded its authority.
