YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO — Darnell E. Jackson, 21, of West Chalmers Avenue, pleaded guilty Thursday to felonious assault, believing he was protecting a friend from a car theft.
Attorney Scott Cochran explained that Jackson was at his brother’s house when he saw someone taking a car from the driveway early in the morning, thinking it was being stolen. The person was actually a repossession worker from an Akron company. No one was injured when shots were fired, and Jackson accepted the prosecution’s recommended prison sentence of 5 to 7 years, said Assistant Prosecutor Pat Kiraly.
Another person also fired a weapon but was never identified or prosecuted. Cochran acknowledged there was no legal justification for Jackson’s actions but emphasized that it was not related to drugs or similar disputes.
Jackson expressed remorse and hopes to turn his life around. In addition to the felonious assault, he pleaded guilty to a gun specification and a separate aggravated drug possession charge for firing the gun on Plum Street on September 29, 2022. Some charges were dismissed in exchange for his plea.
Judge John Durkin sentenced Jackson to 4 to 5.5 years in prison. Prosecutors stated they would not oppose Jackson’s early release on judicial release when eligible, citing the danger his actions posed to bystanders.
