Statement from Gerri Weir, President of Recovery Agents of the Carolinas (RAC), Regarding Fatal Crash Involving Repossession Agent
On behalf of the Recovery Agents of the Carolinas (RAC), I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of former Dublin Fire Chief Jimmy “Pete” Batton. His tragic and untimely death is a profound loss to the community he served with dedication and integrity.
We are gravely concerned by the reported conduct of the repossession agent involved in this incident. The allegations—driving while impaired, operating with a significant criminal history, and engaging in behavior that appears to violate consumer protection laws—represent a clear and disturbing failure of professionalism and accountability.
It is important to emphasize that the company employing this individual is not a member of the Recovery Agents of the Carolinas. RAC membership is more than a label—it is a commitment to lawful, ethical, and professional standards that help protect consumers, creditors, and the public at large. Our association provides essential resources, ongoing education, and compliance tools to ensure repossession companies operate with the highest degree of responsibility.
We strongly encourage all repossession agencies to join reputable state and national trade associations. Active participation in these organizations ensures access to training, peer support, and evolving best practices that help prevent the kind of reckless behavior seen in this case.
This tragic incident is a stark reminder of what can happen when compliance and oversight are neglected. The safety of the public and the integrity of our industry must always come first.
Our thoughts remain with the Batton family during this incredibly difficult time.
